10 Q’s With Michael Mandy Of BidorSend.com

What if you could post a listing for a shipment you wanted to send? And what if this listing was bid on by various and numerous carriers? You’d probably get a pretty darn good price for shipping whatever you were shipping, huh. What if I also told you that
by doing this you would be contributing LESS to pollution and waste – lessening your carbon footprint – by making sure these shipment vehicles remained full? Hopefully you’ve figured out by now that I’m actually meaning to tell you that this IS possible. BidorSend.com is a website founded by Michael Mandy. This environmentally-conscious individual has persevered at great personal cost to bring this revolutionary concept to the forefront of the shipping industry – and it’s about to take off. That is why Michael Mandy and BidorSend.com is the focus of this weeks “10 Q’s With…”; our question and answer series that’s aimed at offering insight to our readers who are interested in the ‘Adventure’ of becoming: The Boss.

Q. Tell our readers about your business, your passion, and what it is that you do? What’s your story? And what sets you apart from other businesses in your particular market?

“I started BidorSend.com in 2009 and it took me a full year to get the website up and running and finally at the end of 2010 we had finished all the coding for the website. My programmer, and friend, is a guy based in Vietnam by the name of Tran Quoc Huy. We have never actually spoken to each other, all our communication was done via Skype. I would draw images as to what I needed and he would just make it happen. My Passion is transportation and I wanted to come up with a website that could be used by anyone in any country; a website that could benefit all: shipper, transporters and even the planet. By keeping vehicles full and avoiding dead miles we can reduce unnecessary co2 emissions. The number of empty vehicles on our roads is scary.”

Q. What inspired you to take the steps to becoming your own boss? Is this your first/only business?

“I left the courier industry about a year ago and started my own small trucking business. While I was still an employed member of society I started my first website called Loads4Africa but that website is limited to mainly South Africa and as said above, I wanted a website that could be used by any person in any country. Like most people “I think” I wanted to be my own boss and work my own hours (which has increased to about 16 hours a day 7 days a week).”

Q. How much planning was involved prior to the start-up of your business? Can you offer some insight into that process?

“BidorSend.com took over a year to develop. It has many more features than what anyone can see at this stage. We even have built in payment systems where shippers can pay the transporter via escrow and the money stays in a safe account until the job is complete. Once the goods are delivered, the shipper then releases the funds into the transporters account. We developed this safe payment option so that a shipper from one country can use a transporter from another country. We didn’t want anyone to not get paid for their efforts – so payment would always be upfront. We have not activated this feature yet, but running a website with these features took planning, tweaking, testing, testing, testing and then some more testing.”

Q. In terms of running your business, what does a typical day look like for you; or is every day different?

“A typical day is spent about 16 hours in front of the pc and running a small trucking business on the side. I have also started a new website focused on Business Ideas, it’s a place where new start-ups can ask questions about going into business for themselves and get advice/mentoring etc. from people with the knowledge. So, most of my time at the moment is spent on that.”

Q. How many employees do you have and what went into hiring on more to your team?

“I am a 1 man business; I am trying to keep my entire website 100% free for all to use at this stage. The websites at a later stage will become subscription based (a very small subscription) my firm belief was that if you are trying to save the planet, it should be free for all to use! But trying to run it out of my own pocket is getting very difficult.”

Q. What has been the most challenging part of your entrepreneurial adventure?

“The most challenging thing was, and still is, the marketing side of things. How do you market a website with so much potential to the world on a shoestring budget? Many ‘Green Initiatives’ are only in it for the profits. I have approached some of these companies, but they haven’t been interested in helping. ‘Going Green for Profits only’ should be their slogans.”

Q. Besides the obvious of being your own boss, what is the most rewarding part about being an independent business owner?

“The most rewarding is taking an idea, seeing all the stages of growth and now finally having the site live on the net. The rewards will come when the website is in full swing and being used by various people from across the globe.”

Q. How do you promote your business? Advertise? Endorse? Contests? Social networking?

“We are working hard on our SEO at the moment and we also use Google to advertise. I am also starting to look for partners in various countries that share my same passion and will promote the website in their respective countries.”

Q. What’s next? What are your long term and short-term goals?

“Sort-term is to find like-minded partners from across the globe to join my venture.
Long-term is to get everyone submitting their shipments onto www.BidorSend.com before just calling their local transporter.”

Q. What advice do you have to those reading www.bossstart.com that you feel is valuable?

“Use BidorSend.com to post all your required transportation. If you get a better price Great! If not, then you have lost nothing. Help spread the word, together we can make a difference!!! Get your local transporters involved!!!
