4 Ways To Keep ‘IT’ Alive: Lessons For The Independent Business Owner

Do you remember what it was like when you first started dreaming about your entrepreneurial initiative? It was almost child-like as there were no boundaries and the level of excitement was unprecedented. In addition, there was some indescribable determination that made no sense to those ‘logical’ folks around you. Don’t you remember what that felt like? You spent hours thinking about your idea and even more hours talking to anyone who would listen! You were obsessed! You were insane!!

Boss Start understands the pure power embedded in this initial stage of entrepreneurship. It’s illogical, maddening, passionate, and contagious – you almost can’t contain it. Now how do you keep ‘it’?! How can you harness the power of ‘it’ each and every day??

While it will drive those around you insane, here are 4 Ways To Keep ‘IT’ Alive!

1. Stay connected to the ‘why’ behind what you do.

The activities you do each day may not be as important as the ‘why’ behind them. To keep the boring and mundane out of your business, stay true to your purpose! Write it down somewhere, share it with others, and keep it personal. This is a foundational component of keeping ‘it’ alive – you have to make what you do personal.

2. Set aside time to dream!

Dreams are about an optimistic tomorrow. Dreams have no boundaries and tend to throw logic out the window. Dreams led to the invention of electricity, flight, countless medical advancements, and a world interconnected via technology. Clearly you have to stay focused on the day-to-day operations of your business. Unfortunately, many of us get so caught up in that day-to-day that we forget what it’s like to dream. We forget what it’s like to be a ‘kid’ in our industry. Commit some time to dream!

3. Surround yourself with people who encourage your obsession.

Facts are facts: those you surround yourself with can make or break you. Do a gut check – do the people around you encourage you to keep ‘it’ alive OR are they trying to kill ‘it’?? Do they support the ‘why’ behind what you do? Do they dream with you or do they simply tell you it’s crazy to think that way? Make sure you spend time with people who support your obsession and who keep innovation alive.

4. Commit to mentoring.

If you’ve accomplished #’s 1 – 3 above, it’s time to give back. One of the best ways to keep ‘it’ going is to mentor others. Finding others who care as much as you and who want to learn from you is invigorating. Mentoring others forces you to remain at the top of your game. A relationship(s) is formed where you feed off one another – much like a professional boxer and his coach.

If you’ve lost ‘it’ – go back and get it! If’ you’ve still got ‘it’ – keep it and pass it along!
