The Right Time To Quit – More Advice From Jeremy Thiel

The Right Time to Quitâ€Â¨

Many people ask me, “When is the best time to quit my day job and start my own business?”  You can start your business right now! If you have a true entrepreneurial spirit and you are ready to open a business, don’t wait. Start working on it before, during, and in between your 9 to 5. Become highly efficient with your time and increase your productivity.

Most people use the excuse, “I don’t have time”. The truth is – there is always time, you just have to get your priorities straight or you don’t have the skills to become profoundly efficient. Turn off the TV, don’t go to your buddy’s basketball game, skip out on the Wednesday Happy Hour and instead – go to work for yourself. I would be willing to bet that you are not very productive, not many people are. Tim Ferris, who wrote the 4 Hour Work Week, uses the 80/20 principle along with Parkinson’s Law to cut his time in half and double, if not quadruple his productivity.

It’s All About Elimination:â€Â¨

The 80/20 Rule states that 20% of the things you do will produce 80% of your results. That means that out of your day only 20% of the things you do are powerful and productive enough to produce 80% of your results. What are you doing the other 80% of your day? More than likely you’re dealing with distractions – eliminate them.

Tim also implements Parkinson’s Law, which explains that the activities you do expand to fill the time you allot to them. Most employer’s allot 8 hours for a typical work day, so we fill it up with activities that expand to fit that time. But what if you only had 4 hours? You would become highly efficient with your time, focus on the 20% of your activities that get you results, and do work.

Disclaimer: I am not advocating that you neglect time spent with your family in pursuit of  opening your own business. However, you can become more efficient with your family time as well as your work time, you can become 100% present and “all in”. It has become acceptable in our culture to spend time with your family with your smart phone or ipad in hand. We constantly check our emails, our friend’s facebook status, fantasy football stats, twitter updates, and all other “plugged in” alerts at all hours of the day. In short, we’ve become a slave to our technology. This severs your quality time with your family and leads to more distraction. Instead, give your family or friends maximum capacity, undivided attention when you’re spending time with them. When it’s time to go to work – be all in.
